The goalkeeping question at FC Bayern continues to be the subject of discussion – but internally there is a great deal of calm

Plans for the coming season are being made in the background at FC Bayern – and the goalkeeper position remains a key issue. With Manuel Neuer, Alexander Nübel and Jonas Urbig, there are several options in focus. However, sporting director Christoph Freund believes the record champions are in an excellent position

„We’ve talked about Manu’s situation several times, that it’s up to Manu. He’ll decide. He’s currently fit and performing well. We’ve said that we’d like Manu to stay for another year, also as a leader,“ explained Freund at the press conference ahead of the home game against VfB Stuttgart

The future of Manuel Neuer remains open, but one thing is clear: Bayern would like to keep the 40-year-old – not only because of his sporting quality, but also because of his role within the team

Nübel and Urbig as strong alternatives to Neuer

At the same time, the club is also looking to the next generation, with Alexander Nübel currently playing a strong season and positioning himself for a bigger role

Jonas Urbig is also regarded internally as a great hope for the future. 22-year-old Urbig is to be developed into a number one in the future, but needs regular playing time to do so

Freund made it clear that Bayern are in a comfortable situation overall: „Alex Nübel is playing a very good season, we have a very good situation overall with our goalkeepers, so we are very relaxed.“

The statements underline the fact that FC Bayern do not have to make any hectic decisions in the summer. Rather, the concrete planning depends largely on Neuer himself

Should the veteran extend his contract, he could continue to play an important role – possibly also as a mentor for the younger goalkeepers. At the same time, Nübel and Urbig would take on more responsibility in the medium term

The goalkeeping question therefore remains exciting – but internally, it is being approached with great calm.
