Gary Neville has backed Chelsea’s decision to target experience this summer with moves for Danny Welbeck and Jordan Henderson.
Chelsea have made surprise approaches for the veteran pair in a bid to add experience to their group. Welbeck is due to undergo a medical ahead of signing a two-year deal, in a transfer that will be the first time Chelsea have paid a fee for a player aged over 26 since 2022.
The 35-year-old could be joined by Jordan Henderson, who has departed Brentford by mutual consent. Chelsea have earmarked the 36-year-old as a potential leader for their squad.
Neville believes Chelsea are making the right move by targeting good, senior professionals, after a difficult campaign last term.
“If you watched Chelsea for the last three, four or five years you’d say there’s inexperience right throughout the football club,” he said to Sky Sports.
“I think putting a spine in of good, senior professionals who act as guardians of good behaviour, responsibility and discipline in the dressing room is something that’s not magic. It’s something all top teams have had for many decades.
“Putting in Jordan Henderson and Danny Welbeck who know how to win Premier League titles, their jobs will be as much off the pitch as it will be on it. They’re still good players who can contribute 25-35 games a season, but they will make sure the young players turn up every single day and give their all.
“I didn’t think the young players at Chelsea have any real leadership or guidance on and off the pitch. They’ve now got people who can do that.”
