MLS side New York City have made an offer to take Vasco defender Lucas Freitas on a one-year loan with an option to buy. The 25-year-old is under contract with Vasco until the end of 2027.
According to Globo.com, the MLS club have approached the centre-back's representatives. Vasco will decide whether to sanction a move, with talks expected in the coming days.
The club are planning departures in the next transfer window to trim the wage bill and free up budget, but first intend to appoint a new coaching staff to steer planning and any negotiations.
Vasco currently have four senior centre-backs, Freitas, Robert Renan, Cuesta and Saldivia. Under Renato Gaúcho, academy player Walace Falcão has also been named on the bench in some matches.
Freitas joined in 2025 and has 46 appearances. Initially recruited as depth, he impressed and started for much of that year until Robert Renan arrived and claimed the place.
In 2026 he has only nine games, most when regular starters were rested, including in the Copa Sudamericana and at the start of the Campeonato Carioca.
