Newcastle 2 Chelsea 0 – Wednesday 30 October 7.45pm
Instant fan / writer reaction from some of our regular contributors on The Mag.
Solid first half where we hounded them relentlessly and forced errors.
Second half we approached completely differently but had enough to see ourselves into the quarter finals of the Carabao Cup for the third successive season under Howe.’
Jamie Smith:
‘Probably the best performance of the season, that could well prove the catalyst for better things to come.
Absolute control in the first half with two well taken goals.
Second half a bit of a sit back but mustn’t grumble when it works.
Krafth and Longstaff our two best players.
A massive lift ahead of Saturday.’
Nat Seaton:
‘Into the quarters we go!!!
What a great feeling to be winning again.
They can write what they like about the Chelsea line up, it still cost more than our team.
A well deserved victory and hopefully a bit of a boost for Saturday :)’
Bazoox:
‘I’ve had a difficult few days. This has cheered me up.
Had a few with a Chelsea fan called Dave in Tynemouth Club this afternoon.
Hope he saw the game because he got well oiled.
Well done Eddie and the boys.
Great response after Sunday’s disappointment at the Bridge.’
GToon:
‘Well that feels a lot better.
A much better performance from back to front.
We looked strong at the back, had more shape in midfield and looked decent up front.
And all of that whilst listening to Chelsea being roared forwards by the two commentators.
Thought I was listening to chelsea tv. Absolutely disgraceful.
Thought Tonali made a big difference in the middle.
Great to get another home draw.’
David Punton:
‘A much needed win and some revenge over Chelsea for Sunday’s narrow loss.
Delighted to say that was a lot better this evening from United and we more than deserve our place in the quarter finals.
We had more intensity. The press worked on Chelsea tonight and a whirlwind 25 minutes saw us take the lead and double it.
Tonali and Willock outstanding, as were Hall and Kelly. Sean Longstaff coming in and covering every blade of grass out there. Love it, given he does have his detractors.
The mood music can hopefully change from here and it has the feel of some pressure being taken off Saturday’s game against Arsenal.’
Matt Busby said to Joe Harvey:
‘Much better.
High intensity first half blew them away, although sitting back in the second half invited pressure we didn’t need and it didn’t improve with our substitutions.
Tonali MOTM. Bruno looked more like himself as well.
As for Chelsea, how can so many £100 million players look so bang average?’
Tony Mallabar:
‘Into the quarter finals and great to get a home draw.
Did it look like the shackles have come off because Bruno wasn’t playing.’
The Armchair Fan:
‘Delighted with that!
Best performance of the season and a fully deserved win to send us into the quarter-final.
Loved the high press and we looked dangerous on the break.
A similar result on Saturday would do very nicely indeed!’
