Newcastle United have agreed a deal to sign Kyran Thompson from Arsenal’s academy, landing one of England’s brightest young attackers.

The England Under-17 international leaves the Gunners as a free agent, having declined the offer of fresh terms. Fabrizio Romano confirmed the agreement with his trademark “here we go”.

The competition for his signature was fierce. Thompson had five separate proposals on the table, with Tottenham among the Premier League clubs pursuing him. He chose Tyneside ahead of them all.

His decision appears rooted in opportunity. The pathway to senior football at Newcastle is considered clearer than at Arsenal, where the queue of talented forwards is long. Development, rather than prestige, drove the choice.

There is history behind the move, too. Newcastle first tried to sign Thompson in 2024, only for him to join Arsenal from West Ham for around £1m. Two years on, the Magpies have finally got their man.

His youth record explains the excitement. The 16-year-old scored three goals in 26 Under-18s Premier League appearances last season, and starred in the UEFA Youth League, contributing a goal and an assist in a 4-2 win over Bayern Munich.

He is a versatile attacker by profile. Thompson operates primarily on the right wing, but can play centrally or off the left, and is admired for his explosive pace and technical quality.

The formalities reflect his age. He will sign an initial scholarship deal, as players cannot turn professional until they turn 17, which Thompson does in early September.

His arrival continues Newcastle’s aggressive academy recruitment. The club have signed a string of scholars this summer, building for the future as they navigate the departures of Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon.
