Newcastle United are braced for a significant bid for wantaway defender Lewis Hall this summer.

According to the Sun, Manchester United are plotting a ‘surprise move’ for the Newcastle left back, although it’s unclear how much they will demand.

Newcastle are facing the prospect of being picked apart following a dismal campaign where they finished 12th in the Premier League.

Missing out on a place in Europe altogether has left the Newcastle squad agitated, and several high-profile players have already been linked with summer exits.

Hall is the latest Magpies star to be linked with a move away, and his omission from Thomas Tuchel’s England squad could be the catalyst for a big-money switch.

The ‘outstanding‘ defender wasn’t selected for the World Cup despite being a mainstay in Eddie Howe’s squad throughout the campaign.

Hall reportedly believes several circumstances towards the end of the season may have affected his chances of making the trip to the United States, Canada and Mexico.

During Newcastle’s 1-1 draw with Nottingham Forest, Hall was deployed at right-back rather than in his natural position on the left.

He was played out of position to cover for the injured Valentino Livramento, who was named in the England squad for the World Cup.

Hall was also taken off at half-time during a defeat to Bournemouth before starting subsequent games against Arsenal and Brighton & Hove Albion on the bench.

Those decisions came shortly before Tuchel finalised his England squad, and there’s a feeling that Man United are looking to pounce on his disappointment at missing the World Cup.

Hall still has three years left on his contract with Newcastle, so the Magpies are under no immediate pressure to sell. But the player is open to making the switch this summer.

He made 47 appearances across all competitions for Newcastle last term, and Man United believe he’d be an ideal long-term replacement for Luke Shaw.
