Newcastle United are stepping up their search for young talent. And Scotland seems to be the latest focus.
According to Lee Ryder from ChronicleLive, the Magpies are keeping a close eye on teenage striker James Wilson, who has impressed for Heart of Midlothian this season. At just 18 years old, Wilson is already making waves in the Scottish Premiership, and Newcastle have taken notice.
It is understood that the club have sent scouts to several matches in Scotland over recent weeks. The recruitment team has visited games involving Dundee United, Motherwell, Aberdeen, and St Mirren – but Wilson is one of the standout names from those trips.
The Edinburgh-born forward has already scored five goals in the Scottish Premiership this term and eight senior goals overall. He broke into the first team last season and has since become a regular for Hearts, showing maturity beyond his years.
Newcastle’s interest comes as no surprise. The club have been expanding their youth scouting network and are now targeting potential gems from lesser-known markets. Wilson fits the mould perfectly – young, technically gifted, and already playing senior football.
According to ChronicleLive, sources at Tynecastle suggest that Newcastle are serious about their interest. Wilson has also been capped at international level, having played for Scotland in the UEFA Nations League against Greece.
With Premier League sides circling, Newcastle will need to move quickly if they want to secure the youngster's signature.
This approach aligns with Newcastle’s new recruitment strategy under Paul Mitchell, who is looking to build depth in the youth ranks while planning for the future. Signing promising players like Wilson could prove crucial in building a sustainable project at St James’ Park.
Given the level of interest and Wilson’s current form, a summer move is not out of the question. Newcastle have done business north of the border before, and they will hope their recent groundwork pays off again.
