Newcastle United have reached an agreement with Southampton to sign goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale on loan with an option to buy according to the Athletic.
The England international has been granted permission to travel to Tyneside for his medical and to complete the transfer, which has a sizeable fee included.
Newcastle had been very interested in long-term target James Trafford before he turned them down in favour of a return to Manchester City.
Eddie Howe previously worked with the 27-year-old while at Bournemouth, and he will become the club's second signing of a difficult summer after Anthony Elanga.
The Magpies have missed out on several high-profile targets, with Hugo Ekitike, Bryan Mbeumo and Liam Delap just a few, while star striker Alexander Isak has asked to leave the club.
Ramsdale joined Southampton in a £25m deal from Arsenal last summer, but now departs following relegation, and will look to challenge Nick Pope for the first-choice position at St. James' Park.
