Gunners may need Brazil star to push for a move as Newcastle dig in their heels
The Brazilian is currently at the World Cup but his representatives have been holding discussions over his future at Newcastle.
Guimaraes has two years left on his current contract and a new deal is not currently close to being agreed.
Standard Sport understands that Arsenal have held initial talks with Guimaraes’ representatives to understand his situation.
The Gunners registered their interest in the 29-year-old and are believed to have made an informal proposal of around £55million.

There has been no direct contact with Newcastle and an official offer has not been submitted as it stands.
However, through Guimaraes’ team Newcastle have made it clear that the Brazilian is not for sale this summer.
The Magpies are determined to keep hold of their captain, particularly with doubts over Sandro Tonali’s future.
Tottenham have had two approaches for the Italian rejected but remain keen to try and reach an agreement for Tonali.
Newcastle’s hopes of keeping hold of their stars have been hurt by the failure to qualify for European football next season.
Despite that blow, Newcastle insist they will not sell on the cheap and have emphasised that Guimaraes will not be leaving.
It remains to be seen whether Arsenal try and test that stance by intensifying their interest and making an official bid.
That could also depend on whether Guimaraes indicates a desire to leave Newcastle.
He has so far not made any move towards trying to secure a transfer, with his focus on Brazil’s World Cup campaign.
Guimaraes started all three group-stage matches and has registered three assists in the tournament so far.
