Newcastle United have been linked with a move for Atalanta’s Marco Palestra, who caught the eye in Serie A this season.

However, per Fabrizio Romano, the Palestra-to-Newcastle transfer is not expected to happen, despite interest and the ability to meet his club’s asking price (over €45 million).

The 21-year-old has not opened the door to a move to Newcastle, meaning the Magpies will have to look elsewhere for reinforcement.

The Geordies have allowed Kieran Trippier to exit St James’ Park after four years as part of the summer reshuffle, leaving Valentino Livramento as the only recognised right-back.

Palestra was on the shortlist of replacements after impressing on loan at Cagliari, where he bagged one goal and created seven big chances in 37 appearances.

His athleticism allows him to dominate defensive battles while relentlessly getting up and down the left flank. He won 61 percent of his ground duels this season.

Why Guela Doue looks like the smarter Newcastle alternative

With Palestra seemingly off the table, Newcastle should quickly pivot towards Strasbourg’s Guela Doue.

The 23-year-old has enjoyed another impressive campaign in Ligue 1 and looks ready for the next step in his career, with several clubs expected to test Strasbourg’s resolve.

Doue offers the versatility Magpies boss Eddie Howe values.

He is comfortable as a traditional right-back in a back four or as a wing-back in a back three, giving Newcastle tactical flexibility while adding quality competition for Livramento.

His attacking output was particularly encouraging last season, with two goals and six big chances created in 24 Ligue 1 appearances.

Defensively, the numbers are equally impressive. Doue helped Strasbourg keep five clean sheets, winning 64% of his aerial duels.

He also held his own in one-on-one situations, coming out on top in 48% of his ground duels.

He has already proven himself in one of Europe’s top leagues and looks perfectly suited to Howe’s high-intensity style.
