Newcastle United looked close to sealing a deal to bring James Trafford to St James Park last summer, but he chose a move to Manchester City.
The Magpies then signed Aaron Ramsdale on loan to compete with Nick Pope for the starting berth.
Unfortunately, it has been a lose-lose situation for all parties involved. Newcastle did not get their man, and Trafford is on the bench at City.
Ramsdale’s time at Newcastle has been uninspiring. He has not done enough to encourage the club to buy him permanently.
He has yet to keep a clean sheet and is not the authoritative presence they need between the sticks.
By contrast, Trafford recently impressed in the FA Cup against Salford City, keeping another clean sheet, before expressing his frustration at being the second-choice goalie.
He thought he’d be the first choice going into the season, but City signed Gianluigi Donnarumma.
The situation now feels like a market opportunity that has swung back in Newcastle’s favour.
Trafford is at a stage of his career where development hinges on regular Premier League exposure, something City cannot currently guarantee.
That creates a rare chance for Newcastle to act decisively and secure a goalkeeper moulded for modern, progressive football.
Manager Pep Guardiola said (via the BBC) that ‘he is so reliable’, but has yet to reward him with regular opportunities.
Trafford’s distribution, composure under pressure and ability to play a high defensive line fit seamlessly with the direction Newcastle want to evolve towards.
The club needs succession planning due to uncertainty over Pope. Waiting any longer risks another rival stepping in.
If Newcastle are serious about building a squad capable of sustained European pushes, this is the summer to sign their long-term number one.
