Liverpool are preparing an offer for Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali and the Italy star ‘could be tempted’ to move, according to reports.

The Reds spent over £400m on new signings in the summer transfer window with the Liverpool board deciding to back Arne Slot, who won the Premier League in his first season at the club.

Despite the marquee signings of Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz, Liverpool have struggled in their title defence with Arsenal currently 14 points ahead of Slot’s fourth-placed Reds.

Liverpool mainly concentrated on improving their attack and defence in the summer with the Reds bringing in several midfielders a year earlier.

Tonali is the Reds’ ‘main target for the summer’ and Liverpool are ‘closely monitoring the situation of the Italian midfielder, who is shaping up to be one of Newcastle United’s strategic sales this summer’.

The Italy international ‘could be tempted by a record-breaking offer in the domestic market’ as Liverpool ‘have maintained contact with the midfielder’s representatives since his early days at Brescia’.

The report adds: ‘Newcastle holds considerable leverage, securing their star player with a contract until mid-2028 at St James’ Park. Sources close to the club claim the Magpies will not negotiate for less than £100 million, a figure that reflects the Italian midfielder’s star status.’

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has already ruled out a January exit for Tonali and claimed that he is Juventus’ “dream signing” for next summer.

Romano said on his YouTube channel on Wednesday: “Tonali will not leave Newcastle in January. Forget about that, it is impossible.

“From Italy there have been stories linking him with a return, especially to Juventus. Juve consider Tonali their dream signing for summer 2026. They already tried behind the scenes in 2025, but it was absolutely impossible with Newcastle. For 2026, Juventus will be there again.

“At the same time, people close to the player expect top Premier League clubs to arrive and show interest in the summer. It is going to be an interesting window.

“But everything depends on Newcastle. They will control the situation and they will control the price. We saw last summer how tough they were in negotiations with Liverpool for Alexander Isak. It will not be easy, but Juventus and top Premier League clubs will be there because Tonali is one of the best midfielders around.”

When asked about his long-term future in November, Tonali replied: “This is a tough question because, you know, [in] football you need to think year for year.

“I don’t want to say I want to stay here 10 years and in two years, three years, four years [or] five years I will go.”

Tonali continued: “The last summer was tough for us, for Alex [Isak], but this is football.

“If you have an option for your life, for another team you need to think about everything.

“I don’t want to say, ‘Yes, I want to stay here 10 years’, but now I’m happy here. I don’t think anything about another team.”
