A late header from academy product Lewis Miley earned Carabao Cup holders Newcastle United consecutive semi-final appearances with a 2-1 win over Fulham at St. James’ Park.

Yoane Wissa opened proceedings for the Magpies on his first start since his £55m move from Brentford, but a bullet header from Saša Lukić promptly levelled the game.

Moments after being denied by a brilliant Benjamin Lecomte save, Miley rose at the near post to score the winner in the first additional minute – repeating the league result in October.

As it happened

The visitors started brightest with a few early corners and were gifted an opening by Miley cheaply conceding possession. Malick Thiaw ran across quickly to intervene.

First blood was to Newcastle after Jacob Murphy – picked out by Fabian Schär’s delightful diagonal pass – crossed low and Lecomte messily parried to the feet of Wissa.

Standing in the right place at the right time, the DR Congo international made no mistake and finished ruthlessly.

But the early setback wouldn’t dampen Fulham’s spirit and they equalized just six minutes later with a move much like the holders’ build-up moments before.

Left back Antonee Robinson took down a high ball over the top from Joachim Andersen, and his dink was headed home by an unmarked Lukić.

Marco Silva’s side looked sharp and were growing into the game as a neat one-two with Kevin, cutting in from the left, gave Harry Wilson a sight of goal, but his shot was tame.

It proved to be the last real opportunity for either side in a close first half.

Fortune didn’t quite favour the bold as Lukić was forced off during the break with a minor injury, forcing Silva to replace the goal-scorer with Harrison Reed.

Numerous key players, including Calvin Bassey and Alex Iwobi, were absent due to their involvement in the Africa Cup of Nations, but Fulham weren’t playing like it.

The second period started much quieter, yet sprang into life when Andersen diverted a ball across the turf from Murphy on the right into the net, though it was ruled out for offside.

Lecomte had made another uncertain lunge for the ball, leaving the net open once again, and the goal being ruled out also saved his blushes.

But Fulham’s second keeper was forced into a decent stop by Tino Livramento aiming for the bottom right corner, played in by Harvey Barnes after a brilliant turn.

Newcastle visibly weren’t prepared to settle for penalties, and enjoyed a dominant spell as the game neared the end of normal time – but Fulham held strong to reach penalties.

Just after the announcement of six additional minutes, Miley’s left-footed curler was turned around the post vitally by Lecomte to potentially save Fulham.

But it was all for nothing, as Miley rose at the near post to head the resulting corner from Newcastle substitute Sandro Tonali past the desperate goalkeeper.

It was deja-vu for the side from London, as a solid away performance was ultimately undone by Miley’s heroics to add to the joy of Wissa’s second goal, and another semi-final.

Newcastle’s inconsistency shows again

Newcastle didn’t dominate, were slow out of the blocks, and at times let Fulham into the game with promising spells. But that isn’t to say they were poor.

Numerous chances fell their way not due to poor defending, albeit Wissa’s first goal in a black and white shirt was certainly of that nature.

Murphy showed much promise down the right and would’ve been the assister to Andersen’s own goal had he not have started in an offside position, and had to rely on top gun Tonali’s match-winning corner in the end.

They managed more than double the shots of Fulham and an xG of 1.54, but went without a shot for over 20 minutes as penalties were looming.

It reflects a mixed season for Newcastle, in which some games they appear well-drilled and efficient in the build up and in front of goal – and other times much the opposite.

It wasn’t a perfect performance, but another Carabao Cup win and fans likely won’t remember this quarter final for the above reasons.
