In a recent post on X, renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano mentioned that Newcastle United are in talks to land Burnley keeper James Trafford. It has been stated that the Magpies are working on a deal to bring the English keeper to St. James’ Park this summer.
Trafford enjoyed a brilliant campaign at Turf Moor recently after he put in a handful of promising displays for them in the EFL Championship. The English goalie made 45 appearances for Burnley last season, conceding 16 goals and keeping 29 clean sheets in multiple competitions.
The 22-year-old proved himself as one of the best keepers in the Championship last season. However, the jury is still out on whether he can maintain his good form in the Premier League if the Magpies manage to snap him up in this summer transfer period.
Trafford is under contract at the Lancashire club until the summer of 2027. Therefore, Newcastle would have to make a big offer if they want to land him this off-season.

Trafford is a good handler of the ball and can use his quick reflexes to make a few solid saves at the back for his team. He doesn’t mind putting his foot through the ball when being chased down by the opposition attackers.
Standing at 1.92m, the English keeper is a strong presence in the air and is not shy of coming out of his lines to collect loose balls and crosses inside his penalty area. However, he has still not proven his worth at the highest level and would need some time to adjust to life at the Tyneside club.
Still, it makes sense for Newcastle to try and get Trafford on board this summer as he would no doubt enhance the quality of Eddie Howe’s goalkeeping department. The English custodian might even help the Magpies compete across all fronts in the coming years.
At 22, Trafford has the potential to be a world-class goalkeeper someday. Hence, he would be a brilliant choice for the Magpies to consider in this transfer window. With all things considered, the Tyneside club would be wise to go all out to bring him to St. James’ Park as long as they can get him for a reasonable fee this summer.
