Newcastle United out-on-loan goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos has ‘earned the respect’ of the Sevilla fans following an impressive performance against Villarreal on Tuesday.
The Greek international, who was Newcastle’s most expensive goalkeeping acquisition for £20m, failed to cement a starting spot in Eddie Howe’s team and was keen to move on during the summer.
Sevilla emerged as suitors, holding talks with Newcastle and ultimately agreeing a loan deal with the Premier League side.
The Magpies also agreed to pay the majority of Vlachodimos’ wages during his stay in Spain to make the move happen.
Vlachodimos is looking to play on a regular basis in Seville, as the World Cup next summer looms large on the horizon.
And, according to Spanish daily Mundo Deportivo, Vlachodimos has already won over Sevilla and the fans.
Following errors from Orjan Nyland, Sevilla coach Matías Almeyda gave the Newcastle United-contracted man a chance between the sticks against Villarreal.
Though he failed to help Sevilla win the match, Villarreal triumphing 2-1, he made a couple of spectacular saves and, the daily said, ‘earned the respect’ of the club and the fans.
It now remains to be seen whether his performances are enough to cement his place in Almeyda’s team going forward.
Sevilla do not have an option to buy contained in the agreement to loan Vlachodimos and would likely need the goalkeeper to take a huge pay cut if any permanent move was to happen in the future.
For now, Vlachodimos and Newcastle will be delighted he has made such an impact in Spain in such a short time.
Next up for Sevilla is a visit to Rayo Vallecano before they then play host to Barcelona.
