Newcastle United’s growing ambition under Eddie Howe has drawn them into several transfer conversations this season, and one of those now circles Scott McTominay. The midfielder’s story shows constant progression, moving from Manchester United’s overlooked option to Napoli’s midfield heartbeat.

The Magpies want to sign Scott McTominay

His time in Italy rebuilt his reputation, with performances that have shown his drive, discipline, and tactical balance. According to a report from journalist Fraser Fletcher, his consistent form caught the eyes of Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle United, and Barcelona. Each club wants a dependable box-to-box figure for their next phase.

McTominay joined Napoli in 2024 for £21 million after he fell out of favour at Old Trafford. The move looked simple at the time, but it turned into a masterstroke. In Naples, the 28-year-old adapted quickly to Serie A’s rhythm and played a vital role in their 2024/25 Scudetto win.

He even finished 18th in the 2025 Men’s Ballon d’Or standings, which showed how much his form improved. This season, the Scottish midfielder continues to influence games with strength in duels, tireless running, and calmness under pressure.

Tottenham’s Thomas Frank reportedly wants the midfielder to toughen up his squad. Barcelona see him as one of three midfielders on their shortlist as Hansi Flick rebuilds the team. However, Newcastle’s interest looks stronger.

Howe values leadership and Premier League experience, and McTominay fits both traits. Napoli, though, refuse to lose him. The Italian champions plan to start contract renewal talks in January and aim to extend his deal until 2030 with a major release clause.

Do Newcastle United really need McTominay?

Newcastle’s midfield already has depth and quality. Bruno Guimaraes continues to control the tempo, and Sandro Tonali should return to form once fit. The club’s main focus seems to be on renewing the contracts of Guimaraes and Valentino Livramento, who are vital for their long-term stability. Bringing in McTominay would add more strength, but the question is whether they truly need him right now.

McTominay drives play forward well, but the Magpies already have players with similar traits. Financially, a move like this could strain their budget. UEFA’s financial rules remain tight, and striker Nick Woltemade already seeks a new club, which may push Newcastle to spend on a new forward instead.

While McTominay fits the profile of a Premier League-ready player, Newcastle’s current midfield doesn’t lack his qualities. They need more creativity and attacking spark rather than another hard-working midfielder. Signing the Scott would be a luxury, not a necessity. With Napoli determined to keep him, this deal looks unlikely, at least for now.
