Tuesday 13 January - Alonso 5/4 for Liverpool job after Madrid sacking

Xabi Alonso is the favourite to become Liverpool's next manager after he was sacked by Real Madrid.

The Spaniard lasted just seven months at the Bernabeu but the Betfair Sportsbook market on the next Reds boss indicates that he will not struggle to land another big role.

He is 5/4 to be the next Liverpool manager. His former-Liverpool team-mate Alvaro Arbeloa has been promoted from Madrid's B team to take over as caretaker head coach.

Alonso impressed during his time in charge of Bayer Leverkusen where he won the Bundesliga - ending Bayern Munich's iron grip on the German league title.

His Madrid reign, however, has looked doomed ever since the team were beaten 1-0 by Liverpool at Anfield. The Spanish side subsequently lost 2-1 at home to Manchester City. On Sunday, fierce rivals Barcelona beat Madrid in the final of the Super Cup. Barca lead LaLiga by four points from Madrid.

Liverpool, meanwhile, beat Barnsley 4-1 in the FA Cup third round on Monday evening. They are 6/1 go all the way in the competition and claim a piece of silverware that could redeem what has so far been a disappointing second season for Arne Slot.

The Dutchman won the Premier League in his first season but, after a dire run in the autumn, the Reds are fourth in the table, 14 points off leaders Arsenal.

Slot is 11/2 to become the next Premier League manager to lose his job - something that seemed unthinkable at the start of the season.

If does leave then some bettors fancy a return for his predecessor Jurgen Klopp. The German is 11/2 second-favourite in the market, followed by Paris Saint-Germain manager Luis Enrqie 6/1.
