Santos drew 1-1 with Corinthians at Vila Belmiro on Sunday 15 in the Campeonato Brasileiro. Neymar underwhelmed, and Gabigol scored to prevent a worse outcome for the hosts.
According to Diario Do Peixe, the pair left with contrasting emotions, and Gabigol reinforced his habit of punishing the rivals.
Corinthians led through Memphis, with goalkeeper Gabriel Brazão powerless to stop it. Gabigol levelled for Santos.
Luan Peres had been solid but was sent off after two yellow cards in two minutes, an avoidable dismissal. Rony worked tirelessly, notably when Santos were reduced to nine. Vini Lira departed injured after just over 20 minutes.
Brazão excelled with outstanding stops from a Gustavo Henrique header and a Kaio César drive. Adonis Frias was beaten too easily in the goal, while Zé Ivaldo kept it simple and even squared up to Memphis. Rollheiser injected purpose and provided passes, including for Neymar’s first effort on target.
Christian Oliva impressed with switches of play and bite, Gabriel Menino came on and was steady, and Gabriel Bontempo was quieter than usual. Willian Arão entered on 20 minutes of the second half and improved the midfield’s positioning, and Barreal was lively but curtailed by an early booking. Thaciano looked off the pace, while Neymar helped create the equaliser yet often tried to force it to prove he is ready for the Cup.
Interim coach Gastón Liendo went with a back three and wing-backs, but was slow to make changes.
