Manchester United’s hunt for a goalkeeper could be about to take a dramatic turn if the latest reports are to be believed.

Emiliano Martinez seemed the favourite to come in and replace Andre Onana, but Aston Villa’s asking price has meant a move has never materialised.

And following the Cameroonian’s injury, INEOS would struggle to cough up the money required to land the World Cup winner. Which all but rules out a move this window.

United’s hunt for an experienced Premier League-proven keeper has now taken them to Newcastle as per Talksport, with Nick Pope on the club’s radar.

Surprise links with Nick Pope

He played 32 games in all competitions last season, keeping nine clean-sheets. But with his current deal expiring in about a year’s time, the Magpies are looking for a younger option.

They have their eyes on Aaron Ramsdale of Southampton, with the Saints demanding a substantial loan fee. Should he arrive, Newcastle could be prepared to let their No.22 leave.

“Nick Pope could emerge as a target for Manchester United if Newcastle sign Aaron Ramsdale. The Magpies are pushing to reunite Ramsdale with his former Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe, although Southampton are demanding a big loan fee.

“With Ramsdale targeting a Premier League number one role to help his chances of being named in the England squad for next summer’s World Cup, his arrival would leave Pope’s position vulnerable.

“The 33-year-old is out of contract next summer and Pope fits the profile of the type of player United are looking for to challenge Andre Onana.”

Goalkeeper needed

The 33-year-old would fit in with what Ruben Amorim wants, due to his significant top-flight experience. His current market value stands at €8 million.

The England international has spent three seasons at St James’ Park but such an opportunity might not come around again given his age.

Whether Newcastle let him leave remains to be seen. They are likely to demand a significant fee from INEOS. It has been far from smooth sailing for Newcastle this summer, and losing their top goalie would be another blow.

Nick Pope is likely to compete with Onana for the No.1 jersey if a move does materialise. His shot-stopping skills earned him significant praise from Eddie Howe, who called him “one of the best shot-stoppers“. However, he will need to work on his distribution skills.

Senne Lammens is another name on the club’s radar. But his arrival is linked with the future of Altay Bayindir. If the Turk leaves, the Red Devils are likely to recruit a new shot-stopper.
