Nico Gaitán has returned to professional football, with Aldosivi announcing his signing on a deal running until December 2027 after he arrived as a free agent.
At 38, it is a surprise comeback. Around a year and a half ago, while at Sarmiento, he said he intended to retire, a decision confirmed at the time by president Fernando Chiófalo.
The former Argentina international cited family reasons to trigger a clause that allowed him to terminate his contract in the event of retirement. After a season with Sarmiento in 2024, he reversed course and has now taken on a new challenge with Aldosivi.
Gaitán built a notable career at Boca Juniors, Benfica, Atlético de Madrid, Dalian Pro, Chicago Fire, Lille, Peñarol, Braga and Paços de Ferreira. Between 2010 and 2016 he became a leading figure at Benfica, winning several domestic titles and playing a central role in European campaigns before joining Atlético.
His return comes with a challenge. Aldosivi have started the season poorly and are still chasing a first league win, and Gaitán will look to use his experience to help change the mood.
