Borussia Dortmund defender Nico Schlotterbeck has reacted (via @bvbnewsblog) to the club’s 2-2 draw with Norwegian side Bodo Glimt in the Champions League.
The Bundesliga side twice took the lead through Julian Brandt against their opponents, but each time threw away this lead with former Eintracht Frankfurt forward Jens Petter Hauge scoring the equaliser in the 75th minute.
On the performance, the 26-year-old reacted with a strong statement:
“What do you mean bitter? At half-time, I said that after going 1-0 up, we were playing extremely nervously and making incredibly poor first touches. Everyone is playing their own game. The players coming off the bench are losing every ball. I always say that it’s also important to kill the game with a winning mentality. We didn’t manage to do that at all. We lob the ball over the goalkeeper, try to dribble past one or two players, want to make it look nice, and that’s not enough.”
Adding:
“We’re playing in the Champions League and that’s not good enough. We can get to 13 points. And I think some people weren’t aware of how important that is. It’s not bitter, it’s just really bad. Killing the game is a matter of quality. If you don’t kill the game and then don’t clear the ball from a throw-in when you’re outnumbered, then it’s 2-2 and that’s not good enough. That needs to be addressed and I said it loudly to the team at half-time.”
In terms of qualifying for the next round, die Schwarzgelben currently find themselves 10th in the table and only one point off the top eight. Of course, if they had won this home game, they would have ended the year in the automatic qualification places.
However, Dortmund now play Tottenham in London and Inter Milan at home to round out their league phase.
This could also have a wider effect on the situation surrounding Schlotterbeck. The defender’s contract situation is ongoing, and if Dortmund continues to show that they are not near competing for a title, then it could cause Schlotterbeck to begin to assess his options.
