Sport Bild reports that Borussia Dortmund defender Nico Schlotterbeck will make a decision on his future by mid-March.
The talk around the 26-year-old’s future has been going on for several months now as he wants to see Dortmund being able to compete for titles before extending at the club.
What may not help the current situation is the pushback on the defender’s post-match comments about chasing current league leaders Bayern Munich.
Schlotterbeck is expected to make his final decision on whether he stays at the Signal Iduna Park or leaves by mid-March.
If the Waiblingen native stays at Dortmund, he could have a release clause that is worth €60m, but could drop to €50m if Niko Kovac’s side fails to qualify for the Champions League.
The 26-year-old has two realistic options when it comes to his future. The first one is that he stays at Dortmund and extends his contract at the club beyond 2027.
The other is join Real Madrid. The Spanish side are the only club to show a real interest in Schlotterbeck, and with the future of compatriot Antonio Rüdiger as well as David Alaba up in the air, Eder Militao is injury-prone.
However, Madrid will only make decisions on transfers once a head coach for next season is confirmed.
