Nico Williams has confirmed a moderate right adductor injury suffered against Uruguay, leaving his World Cup at risk. He has not ruled himself out.
In a lengthy message, the Spain winger called it one of the worst days of his life and vowed to rise again, also criticising the challenge. The player said in a post that the tackle was needless and born of frustration from a fellow professional.
He had just come on in the 76th minute when Nicolás De la Cruz brought him down heavily, prompting a brief flashpoint. Williams angrily remonstrated with his opponent before play resumed.
With three weeks of competition left, the recovery window is narrow. Luis de la Fuente had hoped it was only a contracture or an overload, and Williams says this setback will not halt him. He thanked supporters and expressed hope of returning at this World Cup as soon as possible.
This season has been arduous, with pubalgia plaguing him for months and leaving him below his preferred level as Athletic returned to the Champions League. After a demanding summer he signed on until 2035 on the squad’s highest-paid deal, then adductor issues resurfaced.
In February he chose conservative treatment with specialist Jurdan Mendigutxia, missing key games including the Copa semi-final second leg against Real Sociedad. After overcoming the groin problem, a hamstring injury followed, and now another setback arrives as the World Cup moves on.
