Nigeria’s head coach Eric Chelle has accused DR Congo players of practising ‘voodoo’ during their penalty shootout win against his team on Sunday.
DR Congo defeated Nigeria 4-3 on penalties following a 1-1 draw in the Confederation of African Football (CAF) World Cup play-off final, eliminating them from the qualification process.
Chelle confronted several members of DR Congo’s staff just after their winning penalty. He had to be separated from them by members of his own backroom team.
Nigeria had reignited their World Cup qualification hopes with a 4-1 success against Gabon on Thursday in the CAF play-off semi-final.
The Super Eagles also made an impressive start against DR Congo, with Frank Onyeka scoring a goal inside the opening three minutes.
But Meschak Elia levelled the scores after the half-hour mark. Neither team was able to add to their tally.
DR Congo goalkeeper Timothy Fayulu proved to be the hero for his side. He denied Semi Ajayi in the shoot-out, leaving Chancel Mbemba to score the decisive penalty.
Nigeria have missed the World Cup for the second time in a row, despite having Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman in their squad.
