What you need to know about the 2026 World Cup intercontinental play-offs

Africa's representative in the intercontinental play-offs for the 2026 World Cup will be determined on Sunday, November 16, following the clash between Nigeria and DR Congo.
The Super Eagles and the Leopards are set for a fierce showdown in Morocco in the grand final of the African play-off, having dispatched Gabon (4-1) and Cameroon (1-0) respectively in the semi-finals.
Six teams will participate in the intercontinental play-offs, divided as follows: two representatives from North, Central America and the Caribbean (CONCACAF), one from South America (CONMEBOL), one from Asia (AFC), one from Africa (CAF), and one from Oceania (OFC).
New Caledonia, the Oceania zone finalist, along with Bolivia, who sit 7th in the overall South American qualifiers, have already secured their spots in the intercontinental play-offs.
The two teams with the highest FIFA rankings will receive byes to the second round, while the other four will battle it out in the first round.
The final round will bring together the two first-round winners and the two seeded teams, with the two victors clinching a ticket to the 2026 World Cup.
