Sunderland winger Nilson Angulo is out with a muscle tear and, despite an initial Ecuador call-up, will continue his rehab back in England. The 22-year-old had been named for the current international window.
He missed the Premier League game against Brighton and Hove Albion on 14 March, after which head coach Regis Le Bris estimated a four to six week absence following the 1-0 defeat. Bolavip later characterised his selection as surprising and even controversial.
Eight days on, there was never a realistic prospect of him making Sunderland’s travelling party for the Tyne-Wear derby at Newcastle United. Even so, national boss Sebastián Beccacece included him in the initial squad for friendlies against Morocco and the Netherlands, prompting bemusement.
By Thursday, the picture had shifted, with Beccacece saying Angulo would return to his club to continue treatment. He is due to leave camp on Saturday, alongside midfielder Patrik Mercado of Independiente del Valle, and fly back to England.
Beccacece accepted the pair are significant losses, while the rest of his group are fit. The report also described him as an automatic starter when fit and a key attacking option.
