Sunderland winger Nilson Angulo is sidelined with a muscle tear, and Ecuador boss Sebastián Beccacece has confirmed he will return to Wearside to continue his recovery.
Angulo was a surprise absentee for Sunderland’s 1-0 defeat to Brighton and Hove Albion on 14 March, after which head coach Regis Le Bris said the issue might rule him out for four to six weeks.
Eight days on, there was no realistic prospect of him featuring in the Tyne-Wear derby at Newcastle, and he did not travel.
Despite his fitness, the 22-year-old was then named in Ecuador’s initial squad for friendlies against Morocco and the Netherlands, a selection described as surprising and controversial by Bolavip, which also regards him as a first-choice pick when fit and noted the coach has made similar calls before.
On Thursday, Beccacece confirmed Angulo would head back to Sunderland, with midfielder Patrik Mercado of Independiente del Valle also leaving the camp. Both players are expected to depart on Saturday and fly to England.
Beccacece described their absences as significant and said the rest of his squad were fit.
