Super effort against SKN St. Pölten

FC Red Bull Salzburg Women 1-2 SKN St. Pölten Women (H/T:1-1). Goals: Kobler (1') - Matavkova (12'), Grdisa (84')

After just a few seconds, our FC Red Bull Salzburg women shocked champions St. Pölten. Yet they had nothing to show for it in the end at the Red Bull Football Academy as a lack of concentration in the final phase costs us.

The Lower Austrians were still rubbing the sleep out of their eyes after a two-week break from competition when Emelie Kobler turned away jubilantly! The attacker ran into the channel, received a through ball and left keeper Schlüter with no chance with a curling shot into the top right – as we smashed out way in front (1'). However, it didn't take long for the reigning champions to strike back: Matavkova was left unmarked, received a cross and volleyed the ball into the goal (12').

SKN showed their class, especially after the equaliser. Woelki and Mattner-Trembleau put the ball over the bar and wide of the goal respectively, and our captain Laura Spinn almost made a costly mistake. However, as our team became more and more stable as the first half progressed, nothing else happened before the break – in glorious weather at the Red Bull Football Academy.

There was no shortage of drama after the restart! Sara Grabovac kicked off a series of chances with a header, and both teams had several excellent opportunities after the hour mark. While both a solo effort from Greta Spinn and a powerful free kick from Grabovac were denied by goalkeeper Schlüter, Mattner-Trembleau repeatedly turned up the heat at the other end. However, like her teammates, she was frustrated by Michaela Fischer, who performed so well until an unfortunate moment late on.

Long in hero mode, she failed to make a decisive save on a cross in the final minutes – and Wolfsburg substitute Grdisa finished mercilessly (84'). In the end, our courageous performance against the favourites went unrewarded.

Apart from the result, we're taking away a lot of positives! We've shown that we're absolutely competitive; the serial champions are an incredibly tough yardstick. This experience will help us take the next step in our development. Four games so far and four good performances from my team – today, too, we saw passion, energy, courage and team spirit from the first minute to the last. That's the most important thing for us!
