FC Bayern conceded their first defeat of the 2025-16 Bundesliga season. The Munich side were completely surprised to be beaten 2-1 by FC Augsburg at home in the Allianz Arena on Saturday. Joshua Kimmich stressed after the game that the defeat was not undeserved
FC Bayern suffered a serious setback on matchday 19 of the Bundesliga. The 2-1 defeat against FC Augsburg was not only their first league defeat of the current season, but also saw them squander a 1-0 lead at home in the Allianz Arena. Joshua Kimmich had clear words after the final whistle and spoke openly about the reasons for the disappointing performance
The German record champions initially had the game under control, but once again failed to turn their dominance into clear-cut results. Augsburg proved efficient, more robust in the decisive moments and rewarded themselves late on for a disciplined performance. For Kimmich, the defeat was not an unfortunate slip-up, but the logical result of a performance that did not live up to their own standards

„We absolutely have to accept it today,“ Kimmich stated unequivocally. The 30-year-old stressed that the defeat was by no means undeserved. Although Augsburg had not „played FC Bayern very much“, at the same time a win for Munich would have been just as unjustified. A remarkably honest assessment that illustrates how critical Kimmich was of his team’s performance
Kimmich identified the lack of hunger as a key point. „There was a bit of a lack of hunger,“ explained Kimmich, adding that the team did not really look fresh over 90 minutes. The lack of consistency in the build-up play and counter-pressing in particular meant that FCB never fully took control of the game. Augsburg were „a bit more grippy“ in the final phase in particular, which ultimately tipped the scales
It is striking that Kimmich is referring to a trend that had already become apparent in previous home games. Many games had become unnecessarily tight, although FC Bayern had been superior in terms of play. Against Augsburg, too, the Munich side failed to decide the game early on and shape it in a commanding manner
For Kimmich, the performance itself weighs even more heavily than the result. The defeat will „gnaw at him for a few days“, he admitted. The fact that FC Bayern did not play at their usual top level was particularly disturbing. It was not a game in which they missed chance after chance, but a performance in which they lacked the final consistency and sharpness
Nevertheless, Kimmich is looking ahead. The team’s reaction is now crucial. Losing a game is human and part of soccer. However, it is important to learn the right lessons from such setbacks and get back on track quickly.
