North Korea last featured at the tournament in 2011 in Germany. They appeared at four successive editions from 1999 to 2011, then were banned from 2015 following a doping scandal. They are the current holders of the women’s U17 and U20 world titles.

They did not qualify in 2019 and withdrew from the 2023 finals due to a voluntary Covid lockdown, playing no matches between 2019 and 2023.

Asian Cup semi-finalists Australia, China, Japan and South Korea have also secured their spots in Brazil. The Philippines advanced via the other play-off, defeating Uzbekistan 2-0. The Asian Cup final will see Australia face Japan on Saturday morning in Sydney.
