Sheffield United dropped all three points on Wednesday evening when Norwich City came from behind to beat the Blades 2-1 in the final minutes at Carrow Road.
It was the visitors who got the scoring underway from an unlikely source. After some hard work from Tom Cannon, Callum O’Hare tee’d up Jairo Riedewald just inside the box with the midfielder dispatching smartly at the near post. Norwich equalised from a corner via Jack Stacey in the second half, and after a wave of pressure Amankwah Forson proved to be super sub when he curled the ball beyond Adam Davies with just minutes to spare.
Norwich: Kovacevic, Stacey, Darling, Slimane (Wright 61), Ahmed (Forson 81), McLean, Field (Mattson 60), Kvistgaarden (Mundle-Smith 61), Córdoba, Fisher, Springett (Maghoma HT).
Unused: Moulden, Medić, Gibbs, Chrisene.
Blades: A. Davies, Tanganga, Bindon, Cannon, O’Hare (Ings 88), Brooks (Ogbene 88), Burrows, Campbell (Chong 64), Seriki (Hoever 88), Peck, Riedewald (Rothwell 64).
Unused: Faxon, Arblaster, Hjelde, McGuinness.
Femi Seriki’s first involvement nearly produced an opener. The right-back delivered a dangerous cross from the flank that took a touch off a Norwich defender and spun narrowly wide of the far post.
The opening stages were closely contested, with both sides battling for control in midfield. Norwich threatened next when former Blade Anis Slimane rose highest in the box but guided his header over the crossbar.
Sheffield United responded with a sharp attacking move involving Callum O’Hare and Tyrese Campbell. Their quick interplay opened space behind the defence, allowing Tom Cannon to race through, though his effort from a tight angle drifted wide of the target.
Cannon remained heavily involved and soon created another opportunity through sheer determination. Pressuring Kenny McLean into a mistake, he stole possession before slipping a pass into O’Hare, who drove forward into the penalty area as United began to grow in confidence.
The visitors’ pressure paid off in the 20th minute. Jairo Riedewald met O’Hare’s lay-off with a well-struck volley that flew past the goalkeeper to give Sheffield United the lead.
However, after going ahead, the Blades gradually retreated deeper into their own half as Norwich began to dominate possession. The hosts nearly equalised on 31 minutes when Harry Darling saw his effort deflect wide after striking Tyler Bindon.
Norwich continued to push forward and came close again when Kasper Kvistgaarden powered a header towards goal, only for Japhet Tanganga to block heroically just in front of the line.
Norwich’s pressure eventually told in the 68th minute. From a corner delivered by Jacob Wright, Jack Stacey climbed above the crowd in the box to head home the equaliser.
United nearly regained the lead shortly afterwards when Cannon connected with a corner from Harrison Burrows, but his header drifted just wide of the post.
With the momentum firmly on their side, Norwich completed the turnaround in the closing stages. The hosts edged in front in the 84th minute when Amankwah Forson finished first time after a surging run and cross from Paris Maghoma during a swift counter-attack.
