A lot has been said about the transfer failings at Norwich City over the past few years but one recent arrival who has gone under the radar has been Jovon Makama, with Canaries supporters expecting an eventual windfall to be netted for the impressive summer recruit.

The 21-year-old took his goal tally to six for the season after he scored both goals in the Canaries' big 2-1 win over high-flying Southampton. His six in 18 games is one goal fewer than he managed in 38 League One games at Lincoln City last season.

Given that the versatile attacker made the move from the third tier for just £1.2 million in the summer, it's understandable that the likes of Mathias Kvistgaarden or Papa Amadou Diallo, who arrived from the Danish and French top flight, respectively, for greater fees, garnered more attention.

However, Makama is forcing a narrative shift here, and more and more eyes are starting to turn towards the exciting forward. Given the small fee that Norwich paid for him and the fact that the transfer window is opening shortly, a few murmurs are swirling about how much of a profit Philippe Clement's side can make on him.

FLW's Norwich fan pundit, Zeke Downes, doesn't believe that a sale will be made any time soon, however.

Downes admitted that Makama may have gone under the radar among a lot of the fanbase at Carrow Road this summer, especially given the money which was spent elsewhere on foreign stars.

However, he's happy to state that the 21-year-old is doing a lot of the right things, which makes fans stand up and notice.

"I'm very impressed with Makama," he told Football League World.

"He seems to be the only signing who didn't need time to bed in, which is obviously due to his experience in England and in League One last season.

"He's been able to make that jump to the Championship, which isn't easy, and it's even more difficult when you're young.

"I don't think people were expecting much, and it was one of the signings that we weren't as excited about, which was quite naive in the end, but when you spend a lot of money on people from other countries, you tend to get a bit more excited."

However, Makama's past of coming through the youth setups at Derby County and then Lincoln has allowed the six-foot-five striker to adapt to the physicality of the EFL as a teenager, and he's now reaping the rewards ahead of some of the other bigger names in the squad.

Downes does admit that he has room to grow and more scope to improve, but he believes that he'll have no issues with doing just that.

"He's big and strong, although he probably has to use that strength more," he continued.

"He's quick and good at making the nice little runs in behind, and he has a clear eye for goal, too. That's all you can really ask for at the moment.

"He's improving all the time, and I think he'll improve even more. Having him as an option up front or on the wing is really useful."

As is the case when an exciting, young striker at Championship level starts to hit the headlines, questions will be raised about how far the player can go.

Makama has shown glimpses of top-flight quality during the first few months of his time at Carrow Road, and Downes believes that if he can continue in that vein throughout the rest of the campaign and help the club finish comfortably away from the bottom three, then his value will increase.

However, it's only been a few months, and whilst there's confidence that, as and when the time comes, Norwich will make a profit on the £1.2 million they spent on him in the summer, it's difficult to put an exact price on him right now.

"I can see us making money on him, but I'm not sure how much," Downes said.

"He'd need to keep this up for a full season to know whether he will be worth a lot. But, we signed him for £1.2 million...I'd be surprised if we got less than five [million].

"But it does all depend on whether he can notch up a few more goals and get us out of this current scrap. And I don't see it [a sale] happening soon."

Makama signed a three-year deal with a two-year option in the summer, and with him only just starting to hit his stride at Carrow Road, there's no immediate pressure for the Canaries to sell.

They'll just be hoping that the 21-year-old can continue this form to either maximise a potential fee, or perhaps even fire them back up towards the play-offs in a season or two.
