Former Huddersfield Town manager Mark Fotheringham is reportedly one of the names in the frame to replace Liam Manning at Norwich City.

Former Huddersfield Town manager and Celtic coach Mark Fotheringham is reportedly in the frame for the vacant managerial position at Norwich City.

That's according to The Scottish Sun, who claim that Fotheringham is a contender for the Norwich job as the club begin their search for a replacement for Liam Manning, who was sacked after just over five months in charge on Saturday night.

Manning only made the move from Bristol City to take over at Carrow Road in June, but he endured a nightmare spell in charge of the Canaries, and he departs with the club sitting 23rd in the Championship table, four points from safety.

The 40-year-old was dismissed just hours after Norwich were beaten 2-1 by Leicester City, which extended their winless run in the league to 11 games, while it was also their eighth consecutive home loss in all competitions.

As FLW exclusively revealed on Sunday, the Canaries have approached former Wolves manager Gary O'Neil to assess whether he would be interested in replacing Manning, while ex-Southampton and Rangers boss Russell Martin is also believed to be on the club's shortlist.

Both O'Neil and Martin have plenty of history with Norwich, having represented the club during their playing days, but it seems another former star could potentially make a return as Fotheringham emerges as a possible candidate.

Fotheringham is currently working as a coach at Celtic, having returned to the club two weeks ago to assist Martin O'Neill, who was appointed as interim manager following the shock resignation of Brendan Rodgers.

O'Neill has won three of his four games in temporary charge of the Hoops, and the 73-year-old has described Fotheringham's help as "invaluable", but with the club believed to be increasingly likely to appoint a permanent manager during the current international break, their time at Celtic Park could be set to come to an end.

Celtic is far from the only club that Fotheringham has worked at as an assistant during his career, with the Scot also spending time on the coaching staff at Fulham, Karlsruher, Cowdenbeath, Ingolstadt, Hertha Berlin and Swansea City.

However, while Fotheringham is a highly-rated coach, his only managerial role in the EFL to date was much less successful, with the 42-year-old winning just five of his 21 games during a brief spell in charge of Huddersfield Town in the Championship in the 2022-23 season, drawing six and losing 10.

Despite his disappointing stint with the Terriers, it seems Norwich are weighing up whether to give Fotheringham another opportunity in management, and should he replace Manning at Carrow Road, he would return to the club where he made 76 appearances as a player between 2007 and 2009.

Ben Knapper should avoid huge Mark Fotheringham gamble amid increasing Norwich City pressure

After two failed managerial appointments in Manning and Johannes Hoff Thorup, Norwich sporting director Ben Knapper is under huge pressure to get this one right, and with supporters protesting against him after Saturday's defeat to Leicester, he can ill-afford to make another mistake.

Fotheringham is a well-regarded coach within the football world, but his venture into management with Huddersfield was a disaster, and with the Canaries currently in danger of being dragged into a serious relegation battle, he would be far too much of a gamble for the club to take at this time.

Knapper may feel that, as a former captain of the club, Fotheringham could help to unite the team and supporters, but his time as a player at Norwich ended in controversy as he was stripped of the captaincy after storming down the tunnel after being substituted in a game against Coventry City, with his side later going on to suffer relegation to League One.

If Knapper is keen to appoint a manager with a previous connection to the club, O'Neil or Martin would be much safer options for the Canaries, even if both would come with risks attached after the disappointing end to their spells at Wolves and Rangers respectively.
