Nottingham Forest are on the verge of signing Austria midfielder Xaver Schlager as their first summer addition, with a two-year deal plus a 12-month option expected.

According to Nottingham Post, the 28-year-old has chosen the City Ground despite interest from several leading European clubs, having departed RB Leipzig on a free at the end of last season.

The chance to reunite with compatriot Oliver Glasner, appointed head coach last week, is likely to have influenced his decision. The pair worked together at Wolfsburg.

His anticipated arrival would strengthen a priority area after Elliot Anderson’s British record £116 million move to Manchester City left a sizeable gap in midfield.

Schlager brings experience, having been vice-captain at Leipzig and part of Austria’s team that reached the last 32 of the World Cup. All being well, he should join next week’s trip to Portugal for a warm-weather training camp.

He would compete with Ibrahim Sangare, Nicolas Dominguez and Ryan Yates for places. Further reinforcements are expected before the window closes on September 1, with full-back, centre-back and the goalkeeping department targeted.
