Manchester City may now have found out how much it would take to recruit Morgan Gibbs-White from Nottingham Forest this summer, as per new reports.
The City Ground star is believed to be leading a number of central midfield transfer targets this summer for Etihad Stadium officials, as they look to prepare Pep Guardiola’s side for its next generation.
Following a hugely underwhelming and challenging campaign across competitions, the time has seemingly come for wholesale changes in terms of playing personnel, and that started with confirmation of Kevin De Bruyne’s exit upon the expiry of his contract this summer.
After 10 years at the club, the 33-year-old will leave Manchester on a free transfer, with potential suitors emerging in Italy’s Serie A and the United States’ Major League Soccer, namely concerning Napoli and The Chicago Fire.
But just how Manchester City bosses go about replacing such a significant name in their squad remains to be seen, particularly after a decision was made internally to withdraw themselves from the race to sign Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz owing to rising costs around a deal.
Now, according to the information of MailSport’s Tom Collomosse, Nottingham Forest will expect around £70 million for Morgan Gibbs-White this summer, while Wolves will be due about 10 per cent of any profit courtesy of the original deal back in 2022.
As for the perspective from within Nuno Espirito Santo’s first-team squad, the report states that the players also now fully expect the 25-year-old to leave the City Ground in the coming weeks and months.
Offering his own take on the situation surrounding Gibbs-White’s future, Collomosse wrote, “Nuno Espirito Santo has definitely been frustrated at the constant noise around this, and alluded to it at a recent press conference.
“I’m not sure Pep Guardiola’s very public chat with Gibbs-White on the Wembley pitch after the FA Cup semi-final went down too well at Forest, either.
“I think Gibbs-White’s head has certainly been turned to an extent – but you can’t argue with his last couple of performances, even though he went eight games without a goal or an assist before his strike against Leicester earlier this month.”
It remains to be seen just how much Manchester City value the player at themselves, although the seemingly available nature of his services at a much lower cost than Florian Wirtz this summer will already come as a boost to their hopes of bringing in the Englishman.
City are unlikely to be the only club eyeing the midfielder’s services this summer, with previous reports pointing towards Liverpool and Manchester United as possible suitors, although the feeling is the Etihad side will be frontrunners when the season ends.
Manchester City are also due to intensify their hunt to sign AC Milan’s Tijjani Reijnders, and contact has already been made with both the San Siro side and their transfer staff, as well as the player’s representatives over the idea of a move.
