As reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport – via Roma News, Nottingham Forest are closing in on Polish centre-back Jan Ziółkowski.

The soon-to-be 21-year-old arrived in the Italian capital only last summer, joining Roma from Legia Warsaw for €6.60m.

However, Roma’s need to generate around €50–60 million in capital gains before June ends to comply with UEFA’s financial regulations means most of their players are fair game, with first-choice goalkeeper Mile Svilar also linked with a move away from the Olimpico to make ends meet.

Jan Ziółkowski’s modest wage package (€25k per week gross) and market valuation (€12 million), coupled with Roma’s well known desperation to generate funds, makes Ziółkowski a very attractive prospect for many a European side.

Ziółkowski’s Forest links arrive shortly after the departure of another young defender, right-back Buba Sangaré, who has left Roma after signing permanently with Elche for €4.5 million.

Roma’s (capital) gain will also be Ziółkowski’s gain

Being able to get early exposure to the Premier League tends to do wonders to a player’s career, regardless of where he goes on to play later on.

Nottingham Forest will not be in Europe next season and will prioritise survival first and foremost. Given Roma’s situation and Ziółkowski’s contract, they can make an easy deal here, which would in turn put the young Pole on world football’s most vaunted stage.
