FC Bayern go into the second leg against Real Madrid in a promising position, and a look at the figures underlines why Munich have a very good chance of reaching the semi-finals
The 2:1 away win at the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu was not only a sporting success, but also a historic liberating blow. After nine winless duels against the royals, FCB were able to beat Real again for the first time – and in Madrid of all places. Now the next step is to follow
The statistics are clearly in Munich’s favour. In the Champions League, FC Bayern have won 21 out of 22 away matches in the first leg. Across all competitions, the ratio is 29 out of 30 successful duels
The only negative example comes from the 2010/11 season against Inter Milan – a slip-up that confirms the exception. In plain language, this means that once Bayern have established this starting position, they generally do not allow themselves to be denied progression
Another decisive factor is their home strength. Bayern have won all five home games in the current Champions League season – with an impressive goal difference of 16:3. The Allianz Arena is once again becoming a fortress
Even more impressive: only one of the last 28 home games in the top flight has been lost. 22 wins and five draws underline the dominance in front of their own fans
This atmosphere can make all the difference, especially in knockout matches like this. The combination of self-confidence, attacking power and fan support makes Munich extremely difficult to beat

Despite all the positive figures, Real Madrid remain probably the most unpleasant opponent imaginable. The Spaniards have proven many times in the past that they are good for spectacular twists and turns, especially in the Champions League
Moreover, a closer look at the recent past shows that the Whites have won three times in Munich since 2013/14 – a figure that hardly any other team can match. Only Borussia Dortmund and Borussia Mönchengladbach have enjoyed similar success at the Allianz Arena during this period
The starting position, statistics and current form all speak in FC Bayern’s favour, but these factors have not always been enough against Real Madrid in the past.
