Last week, New York City FC suffered a loss that will probably be up there as one of the worst losses in club history. The Pigeons were up 3-1 against Atlanta United FC, but defensive mistakes ultimately led them to lose 4-3. That was their first loss after scoring three goals as well. As such, the next match will ultimately be a rebound game, where a win is desperately needed.
Thankfully, NYCFC will be at home where they have won two of two matches thus far. The Bronx side will welcome Minnesota United FC, who is having a decent start to their season. They are currently in fourth place in the Western Conference with a 3-1-2 record. While the Pigeons beat the Loons during the preseason friendly, the competitive series is split with two wins each and a draw.
Minnesota won the last game in 2023, but this matchup might come down to the battle of the forwards. The Loons’ Tani Oluwaseyi and Kelvin Yeboah and NYCFC’s Alonso Martínez all have four goals. The stellar starts for the forwards means that each backline will have a lot of work to do, and likely more for the Pigeons. That is why they need to be defensively sound like they were against the Columbus Crew and not like they were in Atlanta.
NYCFC must beat Minnesota and continue to win at home, especially since their struggles on the road are still prevalent in 2025. Anything less will be a failure. The Pigeons must use this as their rebound game that ends with all three points.

While he probably will start, it will be interesting to see whether Thiago Martins is in the Starting XI. The center-back was responsible for two goals last week and visibly argued with Matt Freese after he was responsible for Atlanta’s winning goal. The captain was not very captain-like, but truthfully, he will be needed during the rare Sunday afternoon match.
