Important members of the first-team ranks at both Barcelona and Real Madrid have been omitted from their nations’ squads for the upcoming World Cup.

The more high-profile comes from the defensive setup at the Bernabéu, in the form of Dani Carvajal.

Sidelined once more at present amid what has been a hugely challenging individual campaign, right-back Carvajal has not been afforded a place in Luis de la Fuente’s preliminary list for the summer.

This likely marks the end of a glittering international career for the 34-year-old.

And also left disappointed by the decision-making of his national team boss on Tuesday was Roony Bardghji.

Youngster Bardghji has played a prominent role for Hansi Flick’s Barcelona over recent weeks, amid the absence of the sidelined Lamine Yamal.

The winger’s efforts, however, have not proven enough to earn him a place in Sweden’s preliminary World Cup setup, after making his senior bow for his country in 2025.
