Borussia Dortmund has sacked Nuri Şahin, as reported by Patrick Berger.

The decision comes following four straight defeats to kick start 2025, most recently a 2-1 defeat in the Champions League to Italian side Bologna.

The former BVB and Real Madrid player took control of the Dortmund first team in the summer following Edin Terzić stepping down by mutual consent.

Şahin had to deal with multiple big player exits that summer, including Marco Reus and Mats Hummels.

He bought in a plethora of new talent to help build a new core for the starting XI, but it never quite worked out.

Dortmund has one of the worst away records in the Bundesliga and currently sits in 10th position. Champions League football next year looks more like a fairy tale than a possibility.

The next big question is:

Who’s next? Who will become the new Borussia Dortmund manager?

Several names are already in the hat including Erik ten Hag, Roger Schmidt, and Sebastian Hoeneß.

Ten Hag is keen on the job but doesn’t want to be a ‘firefighter’ manager and would only sign a long-term contract.

Schmidt, most recently of Benfica, could potentially take the job on a six-month contract but he wouldn’t be the ideal candidate.

Hoeneß of VfB Stuttgart is someone BVB are very much interested in. However, he would only be available this summer when they could buy him out of his Stuttgart contract should Hoeneß also wish to leave for Dortmund.
