In a major blow, Real Madrid have announced that key defender Antonio Rudiger has suffered a thigh injury. This comes after the German international was left out of the squad list to face Real Sociedad tomorrow.

“Following tests carried out today on our player Toni Rudiger by the Real Madrid Medical Services, he has been diagnosed with an injury to the rectus femoris muscle of his left leg. Pending evolution,” the statement read.

The injury is understood to have happened in the early minutes of the training session today.

Rudiger has endured a difficult few months with his form dwindling and injury issues bogging him down as well.

Just as he was looking to stake a claim for a regular spot in Xabi Alonso’s team, the German international has suffered yet another setback.

Three months out

While the statement from the club does not mention a recovery period, journalist Arancha Rodriguez has now revealed that Rudiger will be out for three months.

This comes as a devastating blow for Alonso and Real Madrid, considering that the veteran defender remains a key player despite his limited minutes this season.

Furthermore, considering that David Alaba has hardly played and Eder Militao is also coming after a lengthy layoff, having all the defenders fit and available was going to be key, especially with the team expected to play a game every three days.
