Referee Maurizio Mariani has been put in charge of Sunday’s Serie A derby clash between Inter Milan and AC Milan.

This is confirmed by the Lega Serie A, via FCInterNews.

This Sunday, Inter and Milan play their first of two derby matches in Serie A for the season.

The Nerazzurri and the Rossoneri each come into the derby in somewhat mixed form.

Inter have yet to lose a match in the league. However, away draws against the likes of Genoa and Monza have put something of a damper on their start to the season.

Meanwhile, the Nerazzurri’s city rivals AC Milan arrested their dismal started to the Serie A campaign.

Having drawn with Torino, lost to Parma, and drawn with Lazio, the Rossoneri routed Venezia for their first win of the season.

Milan lost to Liverpool in the Champions League yesterday, however.

Inter, meanwhile, face Manchester City in their own Champions League opener this evening.

In any event, though, the derby is a match that tends to defy the form book.

That hasn’t necessarily been true in the last couple years. Inter have won the last six fixtures against their city rivals.

The last Milan victory in the derby dates back to October of 2022.

Nevertheless, Inter will hardly be taking any result for granted on Sunday.

The derby is naturally also a fixture where tempers tend to run high. And officiating controversy is never too far around the corner.

In the most recent match between Inter and Milan in April, a total of three players saw red cards in the closing stages.

The referee for Sunday’s match will be Maurizio Mariani.

Assisting Mariani in his duties will be Daniele Bindoni and Alberto Tegoni.

The role of the fourth official, meanwhile, will fall to Giovanni Ayroldi.

In the VAR booth, Aleandro Di Paolo will oversee the match to ensure to correct any errors by the on-pitch officials.

Assisting Di Paolo in his duties will be Daniele Paterna.

Inter will be hoping that the focus stays on the action on the pitch rather than refereeing controversy.
