The Italian football federation announced that Roberto Mancini will be the new Italy head coach, president Giovanni Malagò said, with Claudio Ranieri to serve as technical director.

The move follows turmoil after Andrea Pirlo was prevented from taking the role because of his ties to a Russian betting company.

Paolo Maldini resigned 15 days after his appointment.

Mancini first led Italy from 2018 to 2021, overseeing the Euro 2021 triumph over England on penalties. He was also in charge for the 0-1 World Cup play-off defeat to North Macedonia.

In his second spell, he only took charge in the Nations League, losing 2-1 to Spain in the semi-final with Joselu scoring in the 88th minute. Italy finished third after beating the Netherlands on penalties.

Italy now look to the future with new faces, having missed the last three editions of the World Cup. The immediate focus will be the Nations League, which begins this season.
