Venezia have announced the capture of Toma Basic, who signed as a free agent after seeing out his contract with Lazio.
The Venetians won the Serie B title, securing a return to the top flight one year following their relegation. This time, they intend to strengthen their squad by recruiting competent players with Serie A experience to avoid another immediate drop.
On Wednesday, the Arancioneroverdi unveiled Basic as their first summer signing, confirming what has been reported in recent days with a statement released on the club’s official website.
Venezia FC announces the signing of Croatian midfielder Toma Basic, who has signed a contract until the end of the 2028/29 season with an automatic renewal subject to certain conditions being met.
Recent reports had claimed that Basic would trigger a one-year extension if his new club avoids relegation at the end of the 2026/27 campaign.
Lazio have thus parted ways with a player who has been on their books since making the move from Bordeaux in the summer of 2021. The Croatian endured rough times at the club, and was reduced to a forgotten figure at one point. But this season, he pulled off a sensational revival following an injury crisis in September, becoming a key player for Maurizio Sarri.
Interestingly, Basic had agreed to extend his contract with the Aquile in the winter, but the club put the negotiations on ice. By the final day of the season, the 29-year-old’s accord with Venezia had already been leaked, so Lazio president Claudio Lotito tried to enquire about the situation during Pedro’s farewell, but was snubbed by Basic, who wasn’t interested in discussing the matter.
