Manchester United considered re-hiring a former manager before turning to Ruben Amorim in November 2024.

Managerial struggles

United and their fans have become experts in managerial sackings over the last few years.

David Moyes, Louis van Gaal, Jose Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Erik ten Hag have all tried and failed to get the club back to where it believes it belongs.

Ten Hag joined the club in 2022 and won the Carabao cup and FA Cup in his first two seasons in charge.

Nonetheless, the second season saw a dramatic drop off in league form and the third would be the final nail in the coffin after a loss to West Ham United just before Halloween.

Amorim’s tenure

Sadly, things have only got worse for United after the hiring of Amorim in November last year.

The young Portuguese manager arrived at the club with a big reputation but his ideas have never really found success at Old Trafford outside the briefest of glimpses.

After the club’s latest defeat to Brentford, most fans are already beginning to accept that Amorim will never be successful at United and are preparing for the next project to buy into.

Nonetheless, after Ten Hag’s dismissal, United almost decided to bring back former head coach, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Almost Ole

The Sun report that “in one corner of the Golden Triangle in Alderley Edge, a former United manager is back in town: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.”

The reports claims that, “there was fleeting consideration given to reappointing Solskjaer on a temporary basis last year if Amorim was unattainable.”

The Norwegian famously shone as an interim manager in the 2018-2019 season, winning 14 of his 19 in charge, including a stirring comeback victory to knock Paris Saint-Germain out of the Champions League.

Solskjaer was swiftly given the job full time and finished third and second in his only full seasons in charge.

He would finally be sacked in November 2021 after a 1-4 defeat to Watford.
