Sunderland wing-back Ollie Bainbridge says he has parked talk of his future to drive South Shields’ push for promotion from National League North. The 22-year-old impressed in a 4-1 win over Macclesfield on Tuesday, sending Ian Watson’s side back top on goal difference before Bedford Town visit on Saturday.

“I’m not too sure what comes next and I haven’t really thought about anything yet to be honest with you. All I’m focused on is getting over the line this season and getting promoted. We are all just focused on Saturday, it’s our last one at home, and that has to be our focus, nothing else.” He told Sunderland Echo.

It marks a turnaround after an underwhelming stint at Kilmarnock last season, then a return to Sunderland’s under-21s. South Shields struggled then, but both have found momentum this year.

Bainbridge is out of contract this summer and Watson has suggested he would like to keep him, while EFL and Scottish clubs are believed to have tracked him. For now he says he is concentrating only on finishing the job.

“Sunderland get all of my videos too so they get to see everything and I get feedback as and when they feel it’s needed. They are quite happy with me and they really trust South Shields as well.”

Operating as a wing-back in Watson’s possession-based system, Bainbridge and Dan Dodds have combined for nine goals and seven assists. The Mariners also boast the division’s best defence, with 41 conceded in 44 league games. “Some players might turn their nose up at this league but it’s been unbelievable for me.”
