Lyall Thomas and Mark McAdam reported earlier this week for Sky Sports that Manchester City, alongside Tottenham and Liverpool, were monitoring Bournemouth’s versatile attacking powerhouse Antoine Semenyo ahead of the January transfer window. When the links emerged, it didn’t seem that Semenyo was an immediate fit into Pep Guardiola’s squad. City is blessed with a plethora of attacking options, and as of right now, it is hard to see City moving for Semenyo in January. It has now been reported that Semenyo has a £65 million release clause in his contract with Bournemouth. Based on that price, it is even harder to see City moving for Semenyo in just over a month’s time.
David Ornstein has reported for The Athletic that Antoine Semenyo has a £65 million release clause in his current contract with Bournemouth. As a result of this, Bournemouth may be powerless to stop Semenyo from leaving the club if the release clause is activated in January. Furthermore, Ornstein reports that Semenyo’s release clause must be activated by a specific date in January to allow Bournemouth time to find a replacement for the Ghanaian international. Ornstein also reports that if Semenyo doesn’t leave Bournemouth in January, a release at a lower value comes into effect in the summer. Lastly, Ornstein reports that Manchester City, Liverpool, and Tottenham have an interest in signing Semenyo.

Now that the price has been revealed for Antoine Semenyo, it appears even more unlikely that City will move for him in January. Pep Guardiola’s side is blessed with attacking options, and it is hard to see City adding another one. If a player were to leave the club in January, that may change the equation. But it doesn’t seem likely that any of Manchester City’s attacking players will depart anytime soon. Antoine Semenyo is a different type of player to what City have in their squad, but as Omar Marmoush has found, there isn’t enough minutes to go around to justify City spending a significant sum of money on another attacking player.
Of course, I could be wrong, and Manchester City could move for Antoine Semenyo in January. But as of right now, for the transfer fee reported, it is difficult to see City moving for Semenyo given the attacking options they already have and they have more pressing needs to address rather than signing another attacking player.
