Eintracht earned a 5-1 home victory over Galatasaray A.Ş. on Matchday 1 of the new UEFA Champions League season.
Three changes Dino Toppmöller brought in three new faces following the league trip to Leverkusen last Friday. Nathaniel Brown started in place of the injured Rasmus Kristensen, while Hugo Larsson and Ansgar Knauff were preferred to Oscar Højlund and Jean-Mattéo Bahoya in the starting line-up. Chance for Eintracht The Eagles had the first opportunity of the game when Knauff’s powerful drive from just outside the box was well saved by Uğurcan Çakır when it appeared destined for the left-hand corner. Galatasaray take the lead The visitors went in front in the eighth minute after Jonny Burkardt lost possession in midfield. Galatasaray sped forward on the counter, which culminated in Leroy Sané feeding a pass to Yunus Akgun, who cut inside Nnamdi Collins and fired low into the bottom right-hand corner.
Eagles turn it around Toppmöller’s charges took a while to recover their composure, but gradually grew into the game. They equalised in the 37th minute when Ritsu Doan intercepted an attempted clearance in the visitors’ penalty area and clipped the ball into the net via a deflection off Davinson Sánchez. Not content to be level, Eintracht pushed for more. They were rewarded in stoppage time when Burkardt crossed into the middle from the right and found Can Uzun, whose shot on the turn flashed into the top left corner (45’+2).
Just 60 seconds later Burkardt was on the scoresheet himself, glancing in a looping Farès Chaibi free-kick inside the far post to crown a spectacular comeback and give the Eagles a 3-1 lead at the interval.
Robust defence Galatasaray began the second half with purpose as they sought a way back into the game, but Eintracht stood firm at the back and kept them at arm’s length. Knauff had the first sight of goal in the 55th minute, only to see his effort blocked by Wilfried Singo. At the other end of the pitch, Sané went close with a shot from distance that only narrowly missed the target. Burkardt makes it 4-1 Burkardt got his second of the game on the break in the 66th minute after Brown scampered to the byline on left and floated a cross into the centre, where the forward headed it in with the help of another deflection off Sánchez. Knauff adds gloss Knauff put the outcome of the game beyond all doubt in the 75th minute. Elye Wahi robbed Gabriel Sara of possession on the edge of his own penalty area and poked the ball to Knauff. He darted around goalkeeper Çakır and slotted into the empty net, sparking wild celebrations as Eintracht secured a 5-1 win.
