Manchester United suffered a 2-1 defeat to 10-man Newcastle United at St James’ Park on Wednesday.

The hosts were presented with the game’s first chance as Sandro Tonali, but his long-range effort flew well over the bar.

Benjamin Sesko and Bruno Fernandes teed up to play Matheus Cunha through on goal, but he skied his effort.

The Magpies could’ve taken the lead after Anthony Gordon found Harvey Barnes with a lovely backheel pass, but he sent his effort wide of the right post.

Bryan Mbeumo squandered a glorious opportunity to fire United ahead after Aaron Ramsdale parried Cunha’s effort to his path, but blazed his effort well over from 10 yards out.

Jacob Ramsey was given a second yellow card and sent off for diving in the penalty area, and the hosts were reduced to 10 men before the break.

Newcastle were awarded a penalty after Fernandes fouled Gordon. The Englishman stepped up for the spot-kick and sent Senne Lammens the wrong way.

United drew level after Casemiro met Fernandes’ delivery from a free-kick.

Shortly after the restart, Lammens comfortably gathered Gordon’s left-footed strike from inside the area.

Leny Yoro thought he had headed the Red Devils in front when he met Fernandes’ inviting cross, only to be denied by Ramsdale.

United continued to push for a late winner with the one-man advantage and almost got it on the stroke of full-time after Joshua Zirkzee tried his luck from range. Ramsdale made a superb save to deny him.

William Osula settled the game after he latched onto Kieran Trippier’s long pass, wriggled his way into the United box and found the bottom corner with a beauty.

The result condemned Michael Carrick to his first league defeat at Man United.
