According to Argentine media, Benfica captain Nicolás Otamendi has recently discussed details concerning his next career step, and River Plate made contact during the recent international window as they pursue him with his contract running down.
DSports reports that club officials later met Otamendi in Argentina to gauge a return home. The meeting was said to have gone well, with the defender open to negotiations starting.
José Mourinho said before the Casa Pia match that any renewal rests with the 38-year-old. The Benfica coach also noted the Argentine has reached 250 Liga Portugal Betclic appearances.
This season Otamendi has played 44 times for Benfica, 25 in the league, 14 in the Champions League, two in the Taça de Portugal, two in the Taça da Liga and one in the Supertaça. He has scored three goals in 3,899 minutes and is valued at €1 million.
Any move now depends on talks progressing following that meeting. For now, River Plate’s interest persists as Otamendi weighs his options.
